Thickened Toenails

Thickened toenails, also known as onychauxis, is a condition in which the nails become abnormally thick. The main cause of this is damage and trauma to the nail bed.

This can occur through minor repeated trauma such as ill fitting footwear or one major incident such as dropping something heavy on the toe. Other causes of thickened nails include:

  • diabetes
  • psoriasis
  • and poor circulation.

The nails can become uncomfortable as a result of increased pressure on the nail bed especially when wearing certain shoes. If left untreated this can cause damage to the nail bed and in extreme cases ulceration under the nail. Thickened nails can be easily and painless reduced at Feetwise Footcare. We can also provide nail reconstruction for deformed nails that remain misshapen even after reduction.
