Corns and callus
Corns and callus build up due to pressure and friction on an area of the foot and develop initially as a protective mechanism. If the cause is not removed e.g. ill-fitting footwear or foot deformity, the corn or callus will build up to the extent that they can become ‘pathological’ and painful.
This is usually when people seek professional advice. It is advisable to seek treatment before this stage in order to prevent further problems such as a change in gait (walking) patterns causing joint pain or even ulceration beneath the hard skin.
In most cases, corns and callus can be removed painlessly by a skilled clinician. However, there is a risk of recurrence unless the cause of corns or callus can be resolved.
